Florida State Symbols

Official symbols of the State of Florida are found in Florida Statute and represent the cultural heritage and natural treasures of the state. Symbols include the fruit; the flower; the shell and even the pie.
Juan Ponce de León

About April 2, 1513, Ponce de León and his crew of three ships made landfall on Florida’s eastern shore. He called the new land La Florida, or flowery land. His landing began the first documented history of Florida.
Ponce de León Inlet Lighthouse

Florida’s 1350 miles of coastline with its lighthouses played a critical role in the exploration, settlement and development of Florida’s history. Ponce de Leon Inlet lighthouse was built in 1887 and is the only Florida lighthouse listed as a National Historic Landmark and is the second tallest brick tower in the United States.
